Dear UAF faculty, staff and students,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Natalia Kozyreva this weekend. “Natasha K” as she was known to her colleagues, served as a senior analyst at the Ӱԭ Earthquake Center for the past 23 years.

Natasha joined the Geophysical Institute after experiencing a rich life and career in Moscow and Kamchatka, Russia. In Kamchatka, she worked at the renowned Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, an organization that has long shared close ties with UAF. She was the on-call seismologist at the Ӱԭ Earthquake Center when the M7.1 earthquake shook Anchorage on Nov. 30, 2018, and in under six minutes, she verified the location and depth of the earthquake’s origin. Natasha is a testament to scientific collaboration that spans the North Pacific.

A memorial service and celebration of life are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Fairbanks Community Museum at the Co-Op plaza. If you or someone you know is struggling with this loss, please don’t struggle alone. Free help is available.
