NextGen students to give overview of summer internships

This summer, 14 University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Fairbanks students participated in the NextGen Internship Program, which is designed to introduce students to food and agricultural careers. Projected warning times from Sand Point earthquake

Research shows early quake warning system could provide critical seconds

A proposed earthquake early warning system could have provided several ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ communities an alert of 10 seconds or more ahead of strong shaking from the magnitude 7.3 quake that occurred south of Sand Point near the tip of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Peninsula in mid-July. Learn more about the research.

The war within the aspen leaves

On one of the friendliest platforms imaginable, a ferocious battle rages. While mowing its way through the surface of a trembling leaf, an aspen leaf miner meets one of its kind. Instead of offering a nuzzle of recognition, the tiny caterpillar tears into the other with its sickle-like mouthparts, while trying to avoid a fatal gash from the other. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

An American Red Cross Lifeguard certification class will be held at the UAF Patty Pool, Aug. 13-16. This will be a blended learning class. Students will complete an online curriculum prior to getting into the pool, and all students must attend all the pool sessions. The course fee is $250. Get more info and register.

Currants, once banned, have revival

Currants were banned in the United States for 55 years, but are now an emerging berry crop around the country, including ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ. Join Lily Hislop, the currant and elderberry breeder for the Savanna Institute, in a free webinar as she explains why currants were banned, how that ban was lifted and the berries' future. UAF Photo Day

A headshot photo station will be available in the Wood Center on Aug. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This will be drop-in only; no appointments are necessary, and it is open to all faculty, staff and students. A UAF model release is required and can be filled in on-site. Photos will be available by the end of the next week at Ìýwith SSO login.

Help Party in the Park reach 200 booths

It's a party and everyone's invited! UAF's annual Party in the Park will take place on Thursday, Aug. 28, from noon to 3 p.m. in Constitution Park. This lively outdoor event is a campus-wide celebration to kick off the fall semester and welcome new and returning students to the Nanook community. Learn more and register for a booth.

Petersburg youths can learn to cook garden-fresh dishes

Middle and high school students are invited to a free Cooking (in) the Garden series at the Petersburg School and Community Garden. Students will make various savory and sweet recipes using items harvested directly from the garden and greenhouse. Read more and register.


Policy brief proposes changes to Yukon River salmon mgmt

A group of Indigenous leaders, scientists and policy experts have proposed management actions to promote recovery of Yukon River salmon and manage their harvest more equitably.
