In Memoriam
Jacques Philip
We are very sorry to share that Jacques passed away August 10, 2023 due to injuries from a car accident. He was a dedicated researcher and a decorated competitive musher who was generous in sharing his knowledge and skill in all things. We miss him terribly and honor his commitment to promoting youth wellbeing through dog care and dog mushing programs.
Jacques was an MD (1985, University of Paris V) with postgraduate training in data science, biostatistics, and epidemiology. He joined the UAF Center for ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Native Health Research (CANHR) in 2008 as Biomedical Informatics Lead, developing and managing CANHR’s participant database. In 2019 Jacques became a Research Assistant Professor and directed the tracking and evaluation core of the American Indian /ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Native Clinical/Translational Research Program. Jacques was particularly interested in social determinants of health in ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Native communities, and developed and evaluated culturally-grounded health promotion programs using the principles of community based participatory research. He focused on programs promoting youth dog mushing including the Frank Attla Youth and Sled-Dog Care-Mushing Program. His most recent career achievements at CANHR involved the development of a new program of research exploring Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning prospects for American Indian/ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Native health. Prior to joining UAF, Jacques spent over 20 years as a competitive musher and continued to maintain a kennel in Nenana. Highlights of his mushing career include 9 Iditarods and many other distance and sprint races.
We will post details for a memorial service when we receive them.
