Lecture scheduled on Ӱԭ salmon traps

Gustavus author and historian James Mackovjak will give a free public lecture, “Ӱԭ Salmon Traps: Their History and Impact on Ӱԭ Communities,” Oct. 22 at the Anchorage Cooperative Extension office.

The lecture, which runs from noon to 2:30 p.m, will also be offered by videoconference in Room 108 of the Brooks Building on the University of Ӱԭ Fairbanks campus, the Petersburg Public Library and campus locations in Kodiak, Homer, Bethel and Ketchikan. Ӱԭ statesman Vic Fischer will introduce Mackovjak, who has written five books on Ӱԭ history, including his most recent, “Ӱԭ Salmon Traps.” Mackovjak describes salmon traps as “among the most efficient fish-catching devices the world has even seen.” The Ӱԭ Legislature banned the controversial traps after Ӱԭ became a state.
