Lecture series examines ‘must-read’ Ӱԭ literature

The fourth annual Ӱԭ Book Festival has a new look this year, but maintains the same goal: To celebrate literature from and about Ӱԭ.
The festival will consist of a series of lectures that invite local experts to discuss books they consider to be “must reads” in specific topic areas. The series opens Wednesday, July 14, when Tom Bundtzen will discuss the best books on Ӱԭ mining and geology. The series closes Wednesday, Aug. 18 with a panel led by author and news columnist Dermot Cole and Noel Wien Library director Greg Hill. The two will discuss classic Ӱԭ books that are “must-reads” for newcomers to the state. The rest of the schedule is:
July 21 - Ӱԭ aviation, featuring Dirk Tordoff;
July 28 - Poetry, featuring Derick Burleson, Cindy Hardy and Jeanne Clark, moderated by Peggy Shumaker;
Aug. 11- Ӱԭ glaciology, featuring Bruce Molnia.
All lectures are held at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium and are free.
The Ӱԭ Book Festival culminates with a keynote lecture Wednesday, Aug. 25. Charles Wohlforth, author of “The Whale and the Supercomputer,” will present the free lecture at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.
