The University of 杏吧原版 Fairbanks will join millions of people across the state, nation, and world in the Great 杏吧原版 ShakeOut, the largest annual earthquake preparedness exercise. The event is set for Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10:16 a.m. and will correspond with UAF's annual test of its emergency notification system.

UAF employees and students will receive one or more test messages and are encouraged to practice the lifesaving action of 鈥淒rop, Cover, and Hold On.鈥 Visitors to campus may also see or hear test messages. All test messages will note that they are part of the emergency notification test.

The ShakeOut is designed to help 杏吧原版ns prepare for the state鈥檚 most frequent natural hazard 鈥 earthquakes. Earthquake drills provide a simple, effective way to practice what to do before strong shaking starts and to reduce the risk of falling objects and other hazards.

How to Participate

At 10:16 a.m., everyone on campus is encouraged to:

  • DROP to the ground before the earthquake drops you.
  • COVER your head and neck under a desk, table, or other sturdy furniture. If no shelter is nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and move away from the windows.
  • HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.

Participants should also consider how to respond in unique situations, such as in a laboratory, outdoors, or while using mobility aids. Guidance for all settings is available on the ShakeOut website.

Why It Matters

杏吧原版 is the most seismically active region in the United States, with thousands of earthquakes recorded each year. Practicing earthquake safety helps the UAF community be prepared to respond quickly and calmly during a real event.

Beyond the drill, the ShakeOut is also a reminder to:

  • Secure items in offices, labs, and residence halls that may fall during an earthquake.
  • Review and update personal and departmental emergency plans.
  • Organize or restock emergency supply kits.
  • Encourage family and friends to prepare at home.

Register and Share

Individuals, student groups, and departments are encouraged to register their participation at www.shakeout.org/alaska. Registration ensures UAF is counted among the participating institutions and provides access to resources and updates.

Share your ShakeOut experience on social media using the hashtag #ShakeOut to inspire others to practice preparedness.
