Science for ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Lecture Series: Glacial retreat at ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ's coastal margins.

The UAF Geophysical Institute presents the virtual 2022 Science for ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Lecture Series. On Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., assistant professor Gwenn Hennon will present “Life on Thin Ice: Glacial Retreat at ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ's Coastal Margins.â€

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ's coastal mountains are home to a stunning array of ice sheets and glaciers. The meltwater from glaciers flows into the ocean, carrying massive amounts of silt and a chemical fingerprint that is distinct from rain-fed watersheds. As these iconic glaciers retreat, they will leave behind valleys that will then become rain-fed watersheds. Scientists from UAA, UAF and UAS are working together to understand how changes in glacial cover will impact water chemistry, fisheries and more in ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ's coastal margins. Join us to learn about lessons learned and questions we still have about the impact of retreating glaciers on ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ's marine life.

Tune in at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays to learn about exciting science from Arctic Ocean exploration, retreating coastal glaciers, DNA mystery solving, benefits of GPS, the workings of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Satellite Facility and more.

Registration closed to watch on Zoom or watch live from the UAF or GI Facebook pages.
