Friday Focus: Amazing, busy summer at UAF

For those of you here in Fairbanks at the UAF Troth Yeddha’ Campus, this was a remarkable week. It began at the tail end of a sweltering July 4 holiday weekend. The smoke was heavy, but then we were saved by a couple of days of much-wanted cool rain. Then, yesterday, Fairbanks was back to the glory of what July can be in the Interior: blue skies, puff-ball clouds, and gentle, warm temperatures. The view from our amazing campus out across the Tanana Valley is breathtaking. Meanwhile, through it all, UAF is busier than ever!

Limited submission funding opportunity for National Forest Foundation program

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is soliciting white papers for the National Forest Foundation’s Collaborative Capacity Program financial awards call for proposals. NFF will only accept one CCP application per organization in 2025. White papers are due July 15.

CNSM hosts SLMath summer school on sea ice modeling

This June, UAF had the honor of hosting a two-week summer school sponsored by the Simons Laufer Mathematical Institute (SLMath), an internationally renowned center for advancing mathematical research and innovation, funded by the National Science Foundation and private donors. The program, focused on mathematical modeling of sea ice and the ecological diversity of polar environments, brought together 40 graduate students from a variety of academic backgrounds--including aerospace engineering, biology, statistics, pure, and applied math--five of whom were UAF students.

Friday Focus: Transitioning UAF's R1 initiatives from research to operations

Just over two years ago Chancellor White asked me to chair UAF's R1 Steering Committee and lead UAF's pursuit of R1 status. While a daunting task, I accepted this role as I knew from experience that working on a strategic initiative with our fearless and forward-looking Chancellor would allow me to actively contribute to positive change at UAF. From a broad perspective, achieving R1 status will give UAF the local, state, and global recognition for being the research powerhouse many of us know UAF to be. This is a respectable goal. Within UAF many of us have an additional take on this goal. We see this as an opportunity to reevaluate the status quo and reinvent ourselves into the university we want to be: A high-caliber university where students, staff, faculty, and administrators work together to deliver exceptional education and conduct impactful research that serves ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ. This is a goal we can all support.

Community-Engaged Fellows begin summer work

A group of undergraduate students is spending this summer working in coastal communities through the ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Sea Grant Community-Engaged Fellowship. Each fellow receives mentorship from a host organization or an ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Sea Grant faculty member and is part of a national cohort of 85 Fellows working with 23 Sea Grant programs across the country.
