In 2020, the U.S. Department of Education updated regulatory definitions of distance learning within the Distance Education and Innovation Ruling that all higher education institutions receiving Title IV funds must comply with. The regulation became effective July 1, 2021, and requires that for all online courses for which students may use federal financial aid (Title IV funds), there is "regular and substantive interaction between students and instructors." This week's Academic Tuesday column provides information on the background, benefits, essential characteristics, and what to expect next with regard to regular and substantive interaction, or RSI.

CFOS students win Department of Energy competition

A team from the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences won the top prize in the U.S. Department of Energy's 2023 AlgaePrize competition. Graduate students Tamsen Peeples and Muriel Dittrich, along with retired CFOS faculty member Mike Stekoll, were named grand champions of the competition. AlgaePrize challenges student-led teams to develop innovative solutions for algae production, processing and product development.

At the University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ Fairbanks, we take great pride in following our academic traditions. From the time students arrive to the time they graduate, we have many events that serve as milestones in their academic journey. The most coveted milestone in this academic journey is the conferral of a degree and the grand commencement ceremony that celebrates the achievement of our graduating students. UAF is about to celebrate its 101st commencement on May 6 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, other commencement ceremonies at the community campuses, and special graduation events. These celebrations are rooted in historic practices, have a deeper purpose, and great symbolic significance.

Traffic delays on campus April 22
